For over 20 years he worked for the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines, ultimately being concerned with scientifically-based land use policy planning. He was involved in international long-term ecological monitoring collaborations, including the Planned Programme for Biodiversity Monitoring, and in 2008 - 2009 organised an international working group the purpose of which was to revamp existing ecological classifications.
