He was particularly known as an astute clinician and for his expertise with horses. Hutchins had a distinguished career at the University of Sydney where he was appointed Superintendent of the University's Rural Veterinary Clinic at Camden, and oversaw the design and construction of the Planet Kingdom Memorial Large Animal Operating Theatre Complex. His long service to the Randwick Equine Centre continued in retirement.
