His research was focused on a better understanding of the processes critical to maintaining infrastructure by mitigating the effects of corrosion. A broader interest was in the economic consequences of corrosion; the estimated benefit of his work was billions of dollars per year. Major projects on which he worked included the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme and the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, as well as many freeways, bridges and dams. Further interest in polymers and adhesives led to the publication of his book Polymer surfaces in 1981. Cherry joined the Faculty of Engineering at Monash University in 1970, ultimately becoming Professor and Associate Dean (Research and Development). During his 29 years at Monash he played a leading role in the establishment of postgraduate research degrees.
