<biogHist>
<abstract>Charles Johnson was a mathematician who spent his career applying mathematics to myriad physical and chemical problems. These problems included the design of aerofoils in cascade, heat transfer in moving fluids, intermolecular forces and the properties of gases, theory of titration, solid state physics, polymerisation kinetics, the morphology of polymeric materials and laser processing. His career spanned a time when mathematical modelling was becoming more important in the development and understanding of research projects. Advances in computer technology enabled more accurate predictions from mathematical models, and he was able to turn his mathematical analysis into sophisticated computer models. Johnson joined CSIRO in 1959, retiring from the Division of Materials Science and Technology as Senior Principal Research Scientist in 1993.</abstract>
