<biogHist>
Sandra Smith was an entomologist and highly-respected scientific illustrator whose career took her to Lincoln College in New Zealand; to Papua New Guinea with the World Health Organization researching malarial transmission by mosquitoes; and to the Research School of Biological Sciences at the Australian National University. During the 1980s she joined the CSIRO Division of Entomology as a key member of the team working on a new edition of the book <span style="font-style:italic">Insects of Australia</span>. Smith took the role of art director for the project, responsible for setting the graphics standards and liaising with publisher regarding printer's requirements. She also produced approximately one third of the illustrations for the book's taxonomic chapters. After the book was published in 1991 Smith worked for the CSIRO Division of Wildlife and Ecology until her retirement.
