Virginia Kilborn is an astrophysicist whose research interests include galaxy formation by studying the neutral hydrogen gas in galaxies. She uses advanced radio telescopes such as the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. Since 2003 Kilborn has been at Swinburne University of Technology where she helped to establish new and innovative space education programs and has taught in the Swinburne Astronomy online program since 2006. She has taken leadership roles including as Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and Dean of Science. In 2021 she was appointed Swinburne's Chief Scientist, her role being to provide leadership in science within and outside the University, driving scientific relationships and policy with government, industry and schools. Kilborn is an enthusiastic participant in women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs and in outreach to schools. Her active involvement in the wider astronomical community included a term as President of the Astronomical Society of Australia.
