When he reached his 50s his interest in natural history was encouraged by Cyril T. White, Queensland Government Botanist. Smith started to collect botanical specimens, his interests expanding to including geology and butterflies. Some of his plant collections were deposited in the Queensland Herbarium. Smith was an active member of the Queensland Naturalists' Club, publishing in its journal, the Queensland naturalist, and serving as President from 1958 to 1959.
