His boyhood interest in natural history led to his extensive field collecting and involvement with naturalists' societies throughout his life. He was a stalwart of the Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria, serving as Secretary for many years. In 1948 Colliver moved to Brisbane to become Curator of the Geology Museum at the University of Queensland. He joined the Queensland Naturalists' Club, becoming President in 1951, and was also active in the Royal Society of Queensland, the Anthropological Society of Queensland, the Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies, and the Museum Society of Queensland.

Colliver's prolific collections are now in public museums:
National Museum of Victoria (now Museum Victoria): approximately 200,000 Tertiary fossils;
Queensland Museum: approx 400,000 Mollusca, 5,000 geological specimens, and anthropological material; the shell collection was notable for the extent of its geographic and taxonomic coverage, and includes the collection of F. Baker (which Colliver acquired from his estate), that of S. C. Richardson (given to him by Richardson's family), and duplicates from the J. H. Simmonds collection (the main part of which donated to Queensland museum 1974).
