She has illustrated a wide range of native flora, fungi and animal fossils. Her illustrations have been reproduced in her own books, in which she often includes details such as associated butterflies, and those of others writers. Lithgow has also made significant collections of local species: over 1,000 insect specimens were lodged in the Queensland Museum, the Queensland Herbarium holds over 500 plant specimens. Collections of frogs, freshwater snails and butterflies are in other repositories.
