He participated in numerous scientific expeditions throughout Queensland. As well as making significant collections of Odonata and Lepidoptera, he was noted as an excellent photographer of insects. Many of these photos were used in the works of other people, including the first comprehensive book on Australian dragonflies, Complete field guide to dragonflies of Australia (2006). In 2013 Reeves and his wife, Joan Bryan, donated to the Queensland Museum their collection of over 4,800 Odonata specimens, largely Australian but including more than 1,300 from New Guinea and the Solomon Island.
