David Hockings, after 25 years as a dairy farmer and commercial flower grower, joined the Horticulture Branch of the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Stock as a horticulturist. He was particularly interested in ornamental plants, including native species, and the insects that are associated with them. This led to many appearances on TV talking about plant diseases, and to the publication of his book <span style="font-style:italic">Friends and foes of Australian gardens</span> (1980, revised edition 2014). Hockings was active in organisations associated with the flower-growing industry, including as Queensland representative on the Australian Cultivar Registration Authority. He held Plant Breeders Rights for several varieties of ornamental plants. Hockings was a long-term member of the Society for Growing Australian Plants, Queensland, serving over 30 years on Council and as President 1982 - 1985. He was also President of the Queensland Naturalists' Club. The Queensland Herbarium holds over 700 of his specimens.
