Johnston. Earlier attempts to establish a naturalists' club in Queensland failed to thrive: the Field Naturalists' Section of the Royal Society of Queensland (founded 1886), and the Natural History Society of Queensland (1892). The Club's aims were the encouragement of the study of all branches of natural history and the protection and conservation of native fauna and flora. There was a strong emphasis on field studies and fostering education in natural history. From 1908 the Club published its journal, the Queensland naturalist. The Club amalgamated with the Queensland Gould League of Bird Lovers in July 1921.
