<abstract>Charles Yule was a naval officer who from 1833 commanded H.M.S. <span style="font-style:italic">Bramble</span> while attached to the Royal Navy's East Indies Station. <span style="font-style:italic">Bramble</span> accompanied, as tender, the expedition of H.M.S. <span style="font-style:italic">Fly</span> under Francis Blackwood 1842 to 1845, and that of <span style="font-style:italic">Rattlesnake</span> 1846 to 1850 under the leadership of Owen Stanley. The purpose of these expeditions was to chart the Great Barrier Reef and surrounding waters. On Stanley's death in March 1850, Yule assumed command of <span style="font-style:italic">Rattlesnake</span> for the remainder of the voyage. During the <span style="font-style:italic">Fly</span> expedition Yule charted Endeavour Reef. He compiled for the Hydrographic Office the 3-volume <span style="font-style:italic">Australian directory</span>, based on the results of the various Admiralty surveys of Australian waters.</abstract>
