It recognises outstanding contributions to the study of parasites by members of the Society, particularly for published work in the preceding five years. The Medal commemorates the contributions to the development of the study of parasitology in Australia from the 1860s to the 1960s by members of the Bancroft and Mackerras families: Joseph Bancroft, his son Thomas Lane Bancroft, his daughter Josephine Mackerras and her husband Ian Mackerras.
