Frederick Green BSc(Eng) WhitEx AMIEAust AssocMInstCE AMIEE, established and was the first head of the Engineering Department of Swinburne Technical College, 1913 until 1928, and then Principal of the College from 1928 until he retired in 1950. He made a significant and lasting contribution to engineering education in Australia.
<p>Fred Green established the engineering school in 1913 and the diploma courses in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical engineering at Swinburne Technical College in 1915. These were the first Swinburne courses to be professionally recognised by the University of Melbourne, and by the Institution of Engineers Australia.</p>
<p>He designed the engineering school for the College, with lecture rooms, drawing office, laboratories for experimental and practical work in applied mechanics, surveying and electrical research, and extensive workshops for turning, fitting, pattern-making, blacksmithing, moulding and hardening. Later he also designed, had manufactured and installed, innovative equipment for testing and production.</p>
<p>From the 1920s through to the 1960s he contributed significantly to professional engineering development as a member, Secretary and Treasurer of the Victorian Advisory Committee of the Institution of Civil Engineers, London.</p>
