In 1963 he joined Swinburne, as head of Production engineering and as Second Vice Principal and retired in 1987 as the Director. He was a leader in cooperative curriculum development and cooperative education, working closely with industry, and was elected president of the World Association of Cooperative Education. He was a mechanical engineer and introduced work experience into the Production Engineering Diplomas at Swinburne in 1963. When the Institute began four year degree courses in 1971, industry based learning (IBL) was added to a wider range of the Swinburne degree courses. Together with Jim Russell, they researched the value of cooperative industry based learning, and in 1983, hosted the 3rd conference of the World Association of Cooperative Education, in Melbourne.
