Julia Howitt was noted for her expertise in the field of water quality and environmental chemistry. Her interests included the role of photochemical reactions in the cycling of carbon and iron in aquatic environments, and analysis of gases and organic compounds in aquatic ecosystems, including pollution caused by heavy metals and organic contaminants. As a researcher with the Murray-Darling Freshwater Research she reported on the water quality of Lakes Hume and Mulwala, and developed a blackwater modelling program to explore possible flooding events in the Barmah-Millewa forests. After lecturing in marine and freshwater chemistry at Deakin University, Howitt joined the Institute of Land, Water and Society at Charles Sturt University. In 2015 her team was awarded the University's Vice-Chancellor's award for Research Excellence.
