His research on the effects of environmental factors on the development and survival of parasitic worms during the period of their life cycle spent on pasture resulted in the discovery that infective stages lasted longer than had been thought. A highly successful research program, under his leadership and in collaboration with industry and state Departments of Agriculture, developed improved disease control methods and alleviated suffering in stock. In a career of over 30 years at CSIRO, Donald became Chief of the CSIRO Division of Animal Health in 1983 and retired as Director of the Institute of Animal Production and Processing in 1994. He was involved in a number of government policy and oversight organisations, including the Wool Research and Development Corporation, Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the New South Wales Poultry Meat Industry Committee.
