Having completed his medical degrees at Cardiff University, he spent a further eight years in psychiatric training in London before coming to Australia. In building his Department he concentrated on undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; state-of-the-art treatment and patient care; and facilitating wide-ranging, quality research. In his own research Davies concentrated on biological psychiatry, publishing world-leading research on tricyclic and monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants. At the same time he supported psychotherapy research. Davies played a leading role in the establishment in 1978 of the Melbourne Clinic, Australia's largest private psychiatric hospital. After his retirement in 1990, he practiced here (and elsewhere) for a further 19 years.
