It contains technical and scientific research papers on mechanical engineering topics relevant to Australia. It was usually published once or twice a year. Prior to 1959, mechanical engineering papers were included in the 'Journal of the Institution of Engineers, Australia' [ISSN 0020-3319] so these Transactions partially supersede that Journal. From 2003 it was superseded by the 'Australian Journal of Mechanical Engineering' [ISSN 1448-8353].

From 1959-1964, mechanical engineering technical papers were published with electrical engineering papers as Electrical and mechanical engineering transactions [ISSN: 0424-7744] with Volume numbers: "EM.1-EM.6". From 1965, mechanical and electrical engineering transactions were separately published. Mechanical engineering transactions papers were published with chemical engineering as Mechanical and chemical engineering transactions [ISSN: 0020-3327] (1965-1975) with volume numbers: "MC.1-MC.11". From 1976 - 2002, mechanical engineering transactions were published separately under various titles: Mechanical engineering transactions [ISSN: 0313-5519] (1976-1978); Transactions of the Institution of Engineers, Australia: Mechanical engineering. [ISSN: 0727-7369] (1979-1995); Mechanical engineering transactions [ISSN: 1328-9160] (1995-1996); Transactions of mechanical engineering [ISSN: 1446-2672] (1997-2002) maintaining a single sequence of Volume numbers: "ME.1-ME.25".

An index to the articles in these Transactions is included in the Institution's publication "Author and Subject Index of publications 1920-1968"; in their annual publication "Index" 1975-1981; in the CSIRO "Australian Science Index 1957-1983"; and electronically in the Institution's "Australian Engineering Database (ENGINE)" 1980-2018.
