Objectives included providing a means of contact and exchange of information for those interested in bird banding, and of ensuring that the process of trapping and banding birds was done without harming the birds or the environment. The change of name was to indicate the intention to be inclusive of people Australia-wide who were interested in the aims of the Association. In 1977 it was reconstituted as the Australian Bird Study Association to reflect the broader scope of the organisation.
