Having joined the Biological and Chemical Research Institute of the New South Wales Department of Agriculture in 1989, from 1993 she assumed responsibility for all aspects of plant-feeding mites in relation to biosecurity, agriculture, and horticulture across New South Wales. For her masters degree Khihinicki undertook the first study of eriophyoid mites affecting commercially important Melaleuca species.
