It superseded the 'Transactions of the Institution of Engineers, Australia' (1920-1928) and the 'Quarterly Bulletin'. It contains technical papers presented at meetings, some Annual Meeting reports and membership changes, obituaries, reports of proceedings of Divisions, and other matters relating to the Institution. From 1959, technical papers were progressively published separately in specialised Transactions and in 1971 the format of the Journal changed to a magazine format, continued to provide Institution news and reports, but with more articles of general appeal. Its title was shortened to 'Engineers Australia' in 1976 and in 2003 changed to 'The magazine of Engineers Australia' and later 'The Journal of Engineers Australia'. In 2015 it was superseded by 'Create : The Journal For Engineers Australia' [ISSN: 2205-5983].

From 1959, the Institution introduced two specialist Journals: the Civil Engineering Transactions [ISSN 0020-3297] and the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Transactions [ISSN 0424-7744], and the number and scope of the technical papers in the Journal reduced.
By the 1960s, 8 issues of the Journal were published each year, dropping to 6 issues per year in 1974.

From 1965, the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Transactions was split into Mechanical & Chemical Engineering Transactions [ISSN 0020-3327] and Electrical Engineering Transactions [ISSN 0020-3300].

From November 1976 the Journal changed to a fortnightly publications in a magazine format, its cover page name was shortened to "Engineers Australia" but the sequence of yearly Volume numbers continued.

From 1977, the Institution introduced Colleges to manage its learned society functions and the General Engineering Transactions [ISSN 0314-6111] was introduced. In 1979 the names of all the Transactions were changed, and other specialised transactions were introduced, including: Australasian Journal of Engineering Education [ISSN 1324-5821] from 1994; the Australian Journal of Water Resources [ISSN 1324-1583] from 1995; the Australian Journal of Structural Engineering [ISSN 1328-7982] from 1998;

From August 1992, two editions of "Engineers Australia" were published: a Civil edition [ISSN 1448-496X], reaching civil and structural engineers; and a General edition [ISSN 1448-4951], reaching mechanical, electrical/electronics and chemical engineers. From April 1993, the frequency changed from fortnightly to monthly publication. However until vol.66, no.3, the ISSN printed inside theses editions remained as ISSN: 0020-3319.

From 1 April 2003, when the Institution of Engineers, Australia adopted the trading name of "Engineers Australia", the name of the Journal was changed to "Magazine of Engineers Australia" but continued the Volume and issue numbers.

An index to the articles in the Journal is included in the Institution's publication "Author and Subject Index of publications 1920-1968"; in their annual publication "Index" 1975-1981; in the CSIRO "Australian Science Index 1957-1983"; and electronically in the Institution's "Australian Engineering Database (ENGINE)" 1980-2018.
