<biogHist>
Swinburne Technical College (until 1913 known as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College) was founded in 1908 and enrolled its first students in 1909. It was the initiative of George Swinburne who wanted to address the need for technical education in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. He found ready support in the councils of the local municipalities of Camberwell, Hawthorn and Kew. The first classes were in wood and iron work, specifically plumbing, carpentry, joinery, fitting and turning, and blacksmithing. Subjects in domestic economy were introduced, and women enrolled, from 1911. Over the years the curriculum expanded to include subjects as varied as accounting, graphic design, and engineering. From 1963 the college offered industry-based learning, one of the first educational organisations in Australia to do so. Tertiary degrees were introduced in the 1970s. In 1992 the College became Swinburne University of Technology.
