Dr Sargent was an Honorary Fellow of Engineers Australia and served it in many positions including Chairman of the Electrical and Computing Branch of Queensland Division 1976, Chairman of Queensland Division 1984, member of the Council 1984 - 1986, Vice President of Engineers Australia 1985 - 1986 and 1988, Deputy Chairman of the Electrical College Board 1988, Deputy President of Engineers Australia 1989 and President in 1990.
