Michael Gallagher was an organic chemist highly-regarded for his expertise in organophosphorus chemistry. For much of his career he was Australia's only academic working in this field. His research focused in the fields of heterocyclic derivatives of main group elements, and in methods for generating reactive intermediates involved in the chemistry of these organometallic compounds. He was noted for his solution to problems (eg. flammability and polymer formation blockages) associated with phosphine gas agricultural fumigant, of ongoing importance in ensuring Australian grain exports are insect- and residue-free. Gallagher played a central role in the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, being a member of the Board from 2001 to2004,and President of the New South Wales Branch from 1994 to 1995. For over 30 years he was at the Department of Organic Chemistry at the University of New South Wales, retiring in 1996 as Associate Professor.
