Ed Grey joined the Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria in 1990 and for the next 30 years played a central role in its affairs. He was instrumental in the successful move of the Club from South Yarra, where it had been quartered at the National Herbarium of Victoria for over 100 years, to its own premises in the Melbourne suburb of Blackburn. During his joint tenure, with his wife Pat Grey, as Editor of the Victorian naturalist, special issues were published to mark the centenaries of the Club and the death of Ferdinand von Mueller, and to recognise the Club's involvement in the declaration of the Mount Buffalo and Wilsons Promontory National Parks. Grey was a regular contributor to the Victorian naturalist and the Field Nats news. His particular interest was in fungi, leading him to promote the formation of a Special Interest Group within the Club, and to co-author Fungi down under: the Fungimap guide to Australian fungi (2005).
