The Chief Scientist of Australia is an advisory office under the Department for Industry, Science and Technology (the name of which varies from time to time), reporting to the Minister. Responsibilities include the provision of high-level independent advice to the Commonwealth Government on science, technology and innovation. The incumbent is an advocate for Australian science internationally and within in Australia, and has a substantial role in communicating science to the general public. The Chief Scientist holds the position of Executive Officer of the National Science and Technology Council (and prior to 2018, of the Council's predecessors). At the discretion of the Government, and often in an ex officio capacity, the Chief Scientist participates in a number of Commonwealth Government advisory committees and panels. These have included the Defence Science and Technology Organisation Advisory Board, the Rural Research and Development Council, and as Chair of the Australian Climate Change Science Framework Coordination Group.
