<p>The initial objectives in 1891 were to "bring the representative members of the profession together socially, to enable them to promote the interests of electrical engineering generally and to take concerted action in all matters of importance affecting their interests".<br />
Initially the group was formed as the 'Electric Club of New South Wales', modelled on overseas kindred clubs and societies, the 'Dynamicables' and the 'Electro-Harmonics', with possible associated links to the Royal Society of New South Wales and the Engineering Association of New South Wales.</p>
