The <span style="font-style:italic">Tasmanian journal of natural science, agriculture, statistics, etc</span> was published in three volumes (17 issues) between 1841 and 1849 by the Tasmanian Natural History Society. It is considered to be the first scientific journal of consequence published in any Australian colony. Distributed as it was to scientists overseas, it proved an important vehicle for spreading information about Australian science to the rest of the world. Contributions were accepted in a wide range of topics and from scientists in other Australian colonies and New Zealand. The first volume included papers on terrestrial magnetism, Tasmanian Aborigines, marsupials, the flora of Geelong (Victoria), and an account of the recent British Antarctic Expedition. In 1849 the journal ceased after the negotiated amalgamation of the Tasmanian Natural History Society with the Royal Society of Van Diemen's Land.
