The Medico-Chirurgical Association of Australia was founded in 1844 by Dr William Bland in an attempt to prevent unqualified medical practitioners from operating in New South Wales. While not clear exactly when the association ended by 1858. Despite its short history it represents an early attempt to regulate medical practice and a recognition of the harms of sub-standard medical practice.
