In 1981 he was appointed foundation Professor of Forest Science at the University of Melbourne, later also holding senior offices in the administration of the University. Ferguson took a leading role in professional organisations; as President of the Institute of Foresters of Australia he initiated the Registered Professional Foresters scheme. He chaired the Victorian Timber Industry Inquiry that resulted in a strategy for modernising industry practice over the following 15 years.
