The Colony of New South Wales (1788 - 1901) refers to the colonial government established on the east coast of Australia in 1788. Beginning as a convict colony of Britain it gained responsible government in 1855. From this point on the Colony of New South Wales (1788 - 1901) had its own Legislative Council, Legislative Assembly, and Judiciary. The establishment of a relatively independent colonial government led to the establishment of colonial departments and agencies that fulfilled scientific and engineering functions in a range of fields including agriculture, public health, and mining. In 1901 Australia federated and the Colony of New South Wales (1788 - 1901) became the State of New South Wales (1901 - ).
