It recognises original research in pure or applied science conducted in the previous six years and deemed to be of high scientific merit, by a resident of Australia or New Zealand. The Prize commemorates Walter Burfitt, a Sydney consultant surgeon, whose donation to the Society (later augmented by donations from other family members) enabled the establishment of the Prize.
