The department was responsible for functions relating to crown lands management and use, as well as conservation of Tasmanian Flora and Fauna. The department was home to organisations including the Geospatial Infrastructure Branch (1980 - 2017) and the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority (1987 - ). In 1989 the Department of Lands, Parks and Wildlife (1987 - 1989) was abolished and its functions split across three new departments, the Department of Administrative Services (1989 - 1989), the Department of Environment and Planning (1989 - 1993), and the Department of Parks, Wildlife and Heritage (1989 - 1993).
