It recognises "original and sustained contributions to earth and related sciences of particular relevance to the discovery, evaluation and exploitation of mineral deposits, including the hydrocarbons." The Medal commemorates Haddon Forrester King who for over 25 years made significant contributions to the Australian mining industry, including as Director of Exploration for Conzinc Rio Tinto of Australia from 1962 to 1970.
