The new department had a director and no council, it was responsible for the administration of legislation relating to cattle disease, fruit cases, and animals and plants considered to be pests at the time (e.g. rabbits and moths). The Department of Agriculture [II] (1911 - 1989) also over saw the Veterinary Board of Tasmania (1918 - ) and the Sea Fisheries Advisory Board (1941 - 1976). In 1989 the Department of Agriculture [II] merged with the Department of Sea Fisheries (1985 - 1989) and formed the Department of Primary Industry (1989 - 1992).
