Flint, salt and ochre mining has occurred in Lutruwita since well before European settlement, the establishment of the Mines Branch (1883 - 1894) by the Lands and Survey's Department (1804 - 1970) saw Europeans mining and quarrying sandstone, limestone, clay and coal then tin and gold. From 1822 to 1848 the colonial government oversaw four convict coal mines which necessitated geological and engineering expertise. In 1894 the Mines Branch (1883 - 1894) became the Mines Department (1894 - 1989).
