<biogHist>
In 1968 the provision of mental health care was placed under the management of a single government agency, the Mental Health Services Commission (1968 - 1993). Prior to this mental health had been the responsibility of the Department of Health Services (1956 - 1989). In 1993 the Mental Health Services Commission was officially abolished by which time many of its core functions had already been transferred to other government bodies. In 1989 functions relating to intellectual disability services were transferred from the Mental Health Services Commission to the Department of Community Services (1989 - 1993) with remaining functions transferred to the Department of Health [I] (1989 - 1993).
