Prior to the establishment of the Central Board of Health in 1886 responsibility for medical care within the colony of Van Diemen's Land was carried out by a variety of staff surgeons, colonial surgeons, and private practitioners. While there was no official department the staff of early hospitals and medical practices were widely referred to as the Medical Department. Government responsibility sat within the Lieutenant-Governors Office from 1804 until 1825 then with the Governors Office from 1825.
