Lutruwita has been home to multiple Indigenous peoples and nations since around 35,000 years ago. British settlers referred to Lutruwita as Van Diemen's Land until 1855 when they changed the name to Tasmania. This change was in part due to growing public desire amongst settlers to distance themselves from the convict past of Van Diemen's Land. Lutruwita was referred to as the Colony of Tasmania until the Federation of Australia in 1901. In 1901 the colony of Tasmania became the State of Tasmania. This entry refers to the colonial government of Tasmania not the land or people themselves.
