For nearly 20 years he was Head of the School of Psychiatry at the University of New South Wales, being appointed Scientia Professor in 2001. He has been active in professional organisations, including the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and on the editorial boards of a number of journals. In 2002 he became the foundation Director of the Black Dog Institute.
