In 1870 the Observatory and Telegraph Department was abolished and merged with the functions of the governments postal department to form the Post and Telegraph Department. The Post and Telegraph Department was responsible for telecommunications (both telephones and telegrams and the supporting infrastructure) throughout South Australia. The department also appears to have retained responsibility for some government astronomical functions and the postal service. From 1901 to 1975 the Post and Telegraph Department was known as the PMG or General Post Office Adelaide. In 1975 telecommunications and postal services were nationalised and functions were transferred to the federal government.
