<abstract>The Observatory and Telegraph Department was established in 1856, its staff included Astronomers, Meteorologists and experts in Telegraphy. The Observatory was established first and then the Telegraph system in 1860. In 1869 the Observatory and Telegraph Department merged with the governments postal department forming the Post and Telegraph Department (1870 - 1901).</abstract>
