<biogHist>
Between 1867 and 1929 the South Australian Government (colonial and state) had three departments responsible for engineering. The Engineer in Chief's Department (1867 - 1906), Engineering Department (1906 - 1908), and the Engineer in Chief's Department (1918 - 1929). There was also a Hydraulic Engineer's Department (1918 - 1929) that existed alongside the Engineer in Chief's Department [II] (1918 - 1929). The responsibilities and functions of these departments appear to be fairly consistent. In 1929 these departments merged with the engineering functions of the Irrigation Commission (1923 - 1931) to form the Engineer and Water Supply Department (1929 - 1995).
