The Municipal Tramways Trust came into operation in 1907 and was tasked with managing Trams and Tram lines in South Australia. Prior to 1907 a series of private companies had owned and operated South Australia's trams and tram network. One of its first tasks was to convert the horse powered tram system to electric trams, then after the Second World War to replace trams with buses. In 1975 the Municipal Tramways Trust was dissolved, and its functions combined with the South Australian Railways (1856 - 1975) forming the State Transport Authority Board (1974 - 1994).
