William James was a medical practitioner and natural history collector who arrived in Sydney in January 1875. From April to September he served as doctor for the <span style="font-style:italic">Chevert</span> Expedition to New Guinea, doubling as collector and taxidermist. His collections were mainly birds but included some mammals, butterflies and beetles. These collections are now in the Macleay Museum, Sydney, and the Natural History Museum, Tring, United Kingdom. James returned to New Guinea at the conclusion of the Expedition and continued collecting natural history specimen, but was killed near Yule Island in the Torres Strait in August 1876.
