The creation of the Fisheries and Game Department occurred concurrently with the passing of the Animals and Birds Protection Act (No. 1365 of 1919). This legislation sets out gun and hunting regulations, providing different levels of protection for different animals across South Australia. It appears the Fisheries and Game Department was responsible for the implementation of this act as well as the functions carried out by its predecessor relating to fish supply and oyster beds. In late 1964 the Fisheries and Game Department (1912 - 1964) was dissolved and in 1965 the Department of Fisheries and Fauna Conservation (1965 - 1972) was established in its place.
