His research focuses on how the body tells the brain about how much body fat we have and levels of blood sugar. He discovered why obesity causes high blood pressure and leads efforts to develop drugs for the treatment of diabetes and obesity. In 2017 Cowley was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Physiology at Monash University in 2017.
