<biogHist>
Wal Taylor was an organic chemist whose research focused on natural products chemistry, including the isolation, structure determination and synthesis of constituents of plants, marine sponges and bryozoans. He was particularly interested in substances with pharmacological or other potential. Some of his discoveries are now widely used in the pharmaceutical industry. For many years Taylor worked with colleagues in Southeast Asian countries in investigating the natural products and bioactive plants in the local floras. In 1984 he became the Australian representative on the UNESCO Regional Network for Chemistry of Natural Products in South East Asia, a role he filled for over 15 years.
